Wings of Betrayal: The Faerie Rebel
by Brittany Wang
Episode 1 of On Wings of Ash & Dust serial novel
published August 3, 2021
YA Fantasy
Blurb: Pixie pirate Quinn may be an outlaw, wanted by all five faerie clans, but she prefers it that way. All she wants is to finally become a captain in the pirate fleet and bury her true identity beneath the rolling waves. Except, she never expected to be looting a funeral—least of all her twin brother’s.
Derailed by the news of his sudden death after he entered a competition for the faerie crown, Quinn can’t stay in the shadows any longer. Risking everything she’s built to avenge him, Quinn and her crew of outcasts infiltrate the world of clashing clans to attempt their biggest heist yet.
But there’s more at stake than she knows. And to truly honor her brother, she’ll have to face the dark past she’s spent years hiding while evading the same dangers that claimed her brother’s life.
First off, I am so thrilled to be part of Brittany Wang's ARC Team. I have followed her author journey on YouTube for a couple of years now, back when this novel was still called Project Fairy Fantasy. And now here it is, out in the world! Congratulations Brittany!
Such amazing worldbuilding—I feel like I'm right there in Faylan with Quinn and the others. I love it! From the deck of the Minnow, to Quinn's home, all the faeries, and everything in between. There's heartbreak and betrayal (hence the title), a mysterious illness, and a dangerous competition. And now Quinn is forced to take her brother's place in the competition. I feel for this pixie. We also meet the first of her competitors toward the end of this episode. The Nymph heir, Aeron, is an interesting character. I'm looking forward to learning more about him as the serial goes on.
And who are those mysterious hooded figures Quinn and Aeron run into just before they get to Eldore? Also visions!
This novel is also written in the present tense. I don't usually like that, but I think this novel changed my mind! As a reader, I'm thrust right into the world of Faylan, seeing everything from Quinn's point of view, and I feel a greater sense of immediacy that I probably wouldn't get from past tense. (I may want to try this in my own writing just for an experiment. Would I enjoy writing something in the present tense instead of my usual past tense?)
If you enjoy reading fantasy, faeries, pirates, competitions, or any combination of these, then On Wings of Ash & Dust might be for you.
