Author Interview with Jason Paul Rice

Jason Paul Rice is the author of The Pearl of Wisdom saga; the Whitney Powers Paranormal Adventures series; and Plight of the Perfect Prince, the prequel novel to the Pearl of Wisdom saga, which is included in the Fire and Fantasy anthology.

Q: What’s your typical writing day like?

Jason: It can vary depending on a few things like where I am in the writing process, so some days might deal with all editing or making additions to the first draft.  I like to get some new material down every day.

Q: How do you approach a new writing project? What kind of preparations do you make?

Jason: I start with any necessary research I might need and then develop a loose outline for the book.  Then, I add in more scenes and sub-plots.  I like Jim Butcher’s “Big Middle” curve to make sure there isn’t a lull in the middle of the book.

Q: It’s a given that creating a book is not an easy process. What’s the most difficult part for you, and how do you push through it?

Jason: The hardest part is to finally step back and let it go.  It’s so easy to tweak this here, or add a little something there every time you look at the manuscript so sometimes you need to just let it go.

Q: What did you enjoy most about writing the book that went into the Fire & Fantasy anthology?

Jason: My story was a prequel to my epic medieval series so I tried to reveal a lot of background and tell a good story without too many spoilers from the series.

Q: Tell me about your path to publication. What process did you go through?

Jason: Self publishing.

Q: What would you say are the most important magazines for writers to subscribe to (or websites to visit)? Which are your favorites?

Jason: I like Mark Dawson’s podcasts.  For the most part, I read books on the craft and on the business and marketing side.  Stephen King and Jim Butcher have good books on writing.  Chris Fox has a great series of non-fiction books about craft and marketing.
